Alaska Quake Felt in Yukon: A Closer Look at the Earthquake Center's Data

The Pacific Plate, which includes the seafloor of the entire Pacific Ocean, is a vast underwater landmass that plays a significant role in Alaska's earthquake activity. That's roughly 150 earthquakes per day, or about one every 15 minutes.

According to reports on the Alaska Earthquake Center's website, people as far away as Kotzebue (530 miles) and Unalaska Island (900 miles) felt the ground shaking. The epicenter of this magnitude 6.1 quake was located approximately 400 miles away from our island and 25 miles beneath the earth's surface. This underground release caused the ground to sway, almost as if we were suspended in a hammock. During this brief moment, I gazed outside through the screen door and spotted a young willow tree swaying gently in the wind. A moose even strolled by upriver, right past our tent.

After mosquitoes forced us to retreat into our tents, we all fell asleep. Suddenly, my dog and I were startled awake by the sound of splashes outside.
